What are herbal supplements
Herbal medicine is the study of medicinal plants. Plants have been the basis for medical treatments throughout most of human history, and such traditional medicine is still widely practiced today.
The earliest historical records of herbs are found in 1500 B.C. where hundreds of medicinal plants and their benefits were found to be listed on clay tablets.
In early history it was believed that the 'vital spirit' of the plant contributed to its therapeutic effect . We have since learnt how plants synthesise hundreds of chemical compounds for function including defence against insects, fungi, diseases, and herbivorous mammals.
In general, herbs are less potent than drugs. Herbs have few side effects but this does not mean you can take them freely and without care. Please always seek advice before taking supplements.
